A 14-person architecture & interiors studio in the Pearl District. We design buildings that listen to their site, age generously, and earn the years they ask of their occupants.
Curated selection of 12 active and recent projects. Full archive (74 built · 2008-26) on request.
A curated selection. Each project linked to a dedicated case study with site analysis, drawing set, material palette, and post-occupancy notes.
A 3,840 sq ft residence on a 16-acre meadow above the Columbia River Gorge. Board-formed concrete, cedar siding, hand-set basalt hearth. Awarded AIA NW Honor 2024.
14-story creative office at SW 12th & Burnside. Mass-timber structure, terracotta rain-screen, three roof gardens.
Adaptive reuse of a 1923 warehouse — 48 residential lofts above ground-floor retail. Salvaged original Douglas fir.
A 2,200 sq ft beach house lifted on board-formed concrete piers. Triple-glazed western exposure. Net-zero ready.
The headquarters for a Portland letterpress and bookbindery — 12,000 sq ft of mass-timber adaptive reuse on Mississippi Ave. Original brick demising walls retained.
Passive House on a fire-prone east-Cascades site. Compact form, deep eaves, all-electric mechanical, fire-resistive cladding.
Atelier Grey was founded in 2008 by Marin Greyson, AIA, on the premise that small studios can produce work that outlives them. Eighteen years later we’re a 14-person practice — six licensed architects, two interior designers, two landscape architects, three project managers, and a model-maker.
We’re deliberately selective. We take on 6-8 projects per year. Every project is led by a partner from first sketch through occupancy. We don’t outsource modeling, rendering, or construction documents. The drawings that leave the studio were drawn by the person who answered your call.
Site analysis, programmatic brief, massing studies, three scheme directions, materials moodboard. We model in chipboard before pixels.
Schematic to design development. Plans, elevations, sections, structural & MEP coordination, interior FF&E. Renderings for permit and client review.
Construction documents, permit submission, bid set, contractor selection, value engineering, specifications. We draw every detail.
Construction administration, weekly site visits, RFIs, shop drawing review, punch list, occupancy. Partners present at every major site meeting.
Full-service from feasibility through occupancy. New construction, additions, renovations, adaptive reuse, historic preservation.
Integrated with architecture from day one. Materials, finishes, custom millwork, FF&E, lighting design, art and book curation.
Master plans, mixed-use districts, transit-oriented development, public realm. Mid-scale — up to 12 acres.
Passive House, LEED Platinum, net-zero, embodied carbon analysis, mass timber, fire-adaptive design for the wildland-urban interface.
Atelier Grey treated the meadow as the primary client. The house listens to the wind, the gorge, the way the snow runs off the basalt outcrop. Three winters in and we still discover something the building was already doing on purpose.
We interviewed nine firms for Nova Tower. Marin showed up alone with a roll of trace paper and sketched in front of us. We knew within the hour. Eighteen months later the building is half-leased and we haven’t had a single value-engineering fight.
